Joan Kennedy

I have been a potter since the 1990’s, graduating from Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC.  I have been fortunate to be able to practice from my home in these beautiful Smoky Mountains.  This gift has allowed me to create functional pieces that I hope will bring pleasure and comfort to those who use them.

My thoughts on craft in general is that these handmade pieces connect us to the natural environment both in the making and the using of them.  Surrounding ourselves with the daily use and observation of art in our home can bring us a sense of calm.

In November, Gallery 164 extended an invitation to artists affected by Hurricane Helene, offering them a platform to exhibit their work as a means of supporting their economic recovery. We were thrilled to share this initiative with the readers of The Laurel of Asheville in their December issue. As a result, Joan Kennedy has become a valued member of the Gallery 164 community.

Tragically, Joan lost both her home and studio to devastating floodwaters. As she embarks on the journey of rebuilding, we wish her strength and success. It is our hope that Gallery 164 can play a small role in easing her path forward.
